[From left to right. Gabby, Marcia, and Lacie.]
Enjoy our conversation with Marcia Davis, parent of our students, Gabby and Lacie Brown, who’ve been with us since 2016. Davis expressed her gratitude for the FabNewport team, “You all are boosting and giving them confidence,” she said. “Gabby and Lacie think they can do whatever they want, more than ever before, because, in their minds, they have FabNewport behind them to connect them to people, to make them go further.”
We are thrilled your daughters are going to the MET School; how does that sit with you?
It’s great. I want them to do something they feel comfortable and happy with. if they are okay, then I’m okay. I have checked with Gabby and Lacie, and they love it.
How would you describe FabNewport if you were talking to someone who doesn’t know about it?
There are a lot of great things through Fab, I don’t have words.
Not having support and not knowing what to do with my kids when we came to Newport, I didn’t know where to start to get them on track. But coming to Fab, everyone there helped us, and the kids took off; Fab worked as connectors with the community.
FabNewport is a support system that every parent needs. whether you are a single parent or not, Fab answers questions or connects you with someone who will solve a problem you have.
They keep your kids busy and out of trouble; they entertain and educate and keep them well-rounded.
How do you think Fab impacted their confidence and how they feel about themselves?
All positive. You all are boosting and giving them confidence. Right now, Gabby and Lacie think they can do whatever they want, more than ever before, because, in their minds, they have FabNewport behind them to connect them to people, to make them go further.
You and your kids are from Jamaica, right? When did you move here?
I’ve always been here, and they were born here too, but we moved to Newport from Florida five years ago.
How did you find FabNewport?
Through the After School Program for computer science and 3D printing.
How has distance learning been going for them since COVID started? Have they changed? And how has FabNewport contributed?
They are not so happy about distance learning, but they strive in whatever situation they’re placed in, to be honest. I know distance learning is working but it’s not the same as in-person learning, they said.
Gabby got a C for her first time because the communications with distance learning aren’t as clear. The C devastated her, but once she went to Fab, she was distracted from the C and entertained by what was happening to her. Fab was like a third eye.
How involved are you in their learning?
I let them do whatever they want; I try to answer as much as possible, but if they ask me something I don’t know, I always say, “ask Steve, ask FabNewport.”
You are like my extended family; that’s my family right there.
We are thankful for Marcia and all her trust in our work.

The Fab Team
