Computer Science Principles-2 Sections:

One section meets in Providence, the other in Newport

Classes Meet Once a Week the Entire School Year

Section 1:  Mondays  2:15pm – 6pm  @Met School, 325 Public Street, Providence, RI

Section 2:  Thursdays 2:15pm – 6pm @FabNewport 1 York Street, Newport, RI

Credits: 1 High School Credit and 8 College Credits

AP CSP offers a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the underlying principles of computation. The course introduces students to the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, large data sets, the Internet, cyber security concerns, and computing impacts. AP Computer Science Principles will give students the opportunity to use technology to address real-world problems and build relevant solutions. Together, these aspects of the course make up a rigorous and rich curriculum that aims to broaden participation in computer science. The University of Rhode Island’s Department of Computer Science and Statistics has developed a rigorous schedule of activities that align with the College Board’s curriculum framework for AP CSP based on their freshmen introduction to computer science. The units have been tested across a 5 school districts in Rhode Island. FabNewport will use the URI curriculum developed by Victor Fay-Wolfe. Students receive 8 credits from the University of Rhode Island for successfully completing the course.

Prototyping 1: 3D Design and Digital Manufacturing-2 Sections

One section meets in Providence, the other in Newport

Classes meet one afternoon a week for entire school year

Section 1: Tuesdays: 2:15-6 at Met School, 325 Public Street, Providence, RI

Section 2: Wednesdays: 2:15-6 at FabNewport, 1 York Street, Newport, RI

Credits: 1 High School; 1 Industry Approved Certificate as an Autodesk Certified User

Instructor: Jeff Elsbecker RISD,  Masters in Fine Arts

This class blends technical instruction with hands on learning. Students are coached to use Fusion 360 through a combination of instructor modeling and video tutorials. Students tackle multiple guided challenges to build skills and develop personal projects. Design thinking is is taught concurrently. The hands-on challenges are designed to help students see the connection between the physical and digital worlds. We emphasize design and making as a craft requiring problem solving, patience and collaboration. Our practice is modeled after programs at the Stanford Design School.

Wearables 1: Introduction in to Embedding Electronics and Clothing

One Semester

Tuesdays and Thursday: 3:15-5:15 at Thompson Middle School, 55 Broadway, Newport, RI

Credits: 1 High School Credit

Wearables is designed to give students exposure to one of the hottest fields going. Learn how to sew, code and control electronics to create innovative “clothing” for function and fashion. This course is coordinated with MIT and the Advanced Functional Fabrics Association of America.

This will be a fun class for middle and high school students. You will ample opportunity to explore and collaborate while making cool things with embedded sensors and electronics.
