“Float Your Boat” a project of FabNewport
Newport, APRIL, 2014: FabNewport is pleased to announce we are looking for families to participate in our Float Your Boat project. This spring, Float Your Boat will work with two Newport families to dream, design and make a boat they can use to access Narragansett Bay. The project is free for participating families thanks to the generous support of the Newport Hospital Prince Foundation.
Although we live on an island, many families do not have the resources and skills required to enjoy regular time on the water. Float Your Boat is a community based full circle boat design, build and sail program. Families will work together to build wooden boats and sail them, creating new opportunities in their communities and better lives for themselves.
We are looking for two families to participate in our project.
• If there are any interested families and or volunteers please contact Ben Ellcome at Ellcome.firstname.lastname@example.org
• We are also inviting anyone to an open house at the Newport Fab Lab 1 York St on May 6th at 5:30 pm to 7:00pm. We would like the public to come by and find out more information about the project and the Fab Lab
The project is split into three stages:
Design: Participants will create a 3D model of their boat in Rhino. The design portion of the project will be taught by local experts in the marine design field and designs will be cut at New England Boat Works.
Build: Participants will be introduced to the stitch and glue method of boat building. Pieces of plywood will punctured along the edges, stitched together and then glued and fiber glassed on the outside. All under the guidance of local experts.
On the Water: Participants will gain experience with their boats on the water. The participants will learn about water and weather conditions, and boat handling on the open water.
FabNewport is a nonprofit operating a fab lab in Newport’s North End. A fab lab is a small-scale community workshop where community members use powerful technology and materials to make (almost) anything. Our mission is to teach community members to use digital fabrication and technology to turn ideas into realities and empower them to dream, design and make.
